THE BODY of the young man who committed suicide by shooting himself a few
days since on Pacific street wharf, San Francisco, has been identified as
that of Charles READ, who, about 2 years since was engaged in mining at
Sherlock’s, Mariposa county, where he possessed a fine claim. While under
the influence of liquor he shot an Indian at that place and decamped, since
which time those who knew him there have not heard anything of his
whereabouts. Deceased was attached to DONI-HAN’s Regiment during the
Mexican war as a teamster

SELF INFLICTED WOUNDS
PROVE FATAL
Charles A. Schlageter, a pioneer resident of Mariposa county, died at
Mariposa, Tuesday night as the result of slashing his throat with a
butcher knife Friday night of last week with suicidal intent.
Schlageter was 71 years old and was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He
came to California when a small boy and was one of the oldest residents
of that district. For many years he was in the hotel business, but had
not been active for several years.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Barbara Schlageter of Palo Alto; two
sons, C. C. And Ward Schlageter of Mariposa; a daughter, Mrs. Lulu
Anderson of Oakland; three sisters, Mrs. C. L. Lathroup and Mrs. H.
Widman of Palo Alto, and Mrs. Julia Reed of Berkeley, and two brothers,
Herman Schlageter of Palo Alto and F. W. Schlageter of Mariposa.
Funeral services will be held in Mariposa this afternoon at 2 o’clock.
Interment will be
in the Mariposa cemetery.
