STAGES ROBBED
Merced Express, July 31, 1920
BANDIT HOLDS UP FOUR
YOSEMITE STAGES
Four automobile stages, en route to the Yosemite Valley from Merced were
held up and the passengers in two of them were robbed by a long bandit
at a point on the mountain road, about a mile and a half south of Miami
Lodge in Mariposa county about 1 o’clock last Saturday afternoon. The
bandit secured about $300, as near as could be estimated.
The holdup was staged in true western fashion. A log had been thrown
across the road and a s the first stage rolled up to it, the bandit
suddenly appeared form the underbrush, on the upper side of the road and
commanded the passengers to sit still. He was armed with a rifle and had
a flour sack thrown over his head.
Three of the cars were traveling very closely together. The bandit then
commanded C. M. Marcusson of Detroit, a passenger in the third car to
pass his hat for money from the passengers in the second and third cars.
After the money had been turned over to him, he commanded everyone in
the four cars to remain still until he got away, informing them that he
had two accomplices in the brush. He then disappeared in the brush.
Although Sheriffs Turner of Mariposa and Barnett of Madera with a large
number of deputies made a diligent search for the bandit, he is still at
large.
