YOSEMITE STAGE ACCIDENT
Two are Injured When Stage
Went Over Cliff.
An accident which came near being the most terrible in the history of
Yosemite Valley passenger traffic, occurred last Sunday afternoon as the
stages were making the down trip over the sixteen mile drive from
Yosemite to El Portal.
At a point known as the Devil's Elbow the coach driven by John Martin
and carrying eleven passengers went over the embankment carrying two of
the occupants down the declivity were it lodged in some trees.
Both passengers, a lady and a gentleman, were badly hurt, two horses
were killed and the coach was but slightly damaged.
The road bed is rather narrow at the point where the accident happened
and is not well built up on the outer ledge. One of the lead horses
stumbled and in regaining its feet knocked its mate off the grade; the
wheel horses then went over and the driver seeing that the stage must
follow called to the passengers to jump and sprang form the box himself
as the vehicle tumbled over.
The injured parties, Mr. John Uhim of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. Weeks
of Cleveland, Ohio, with the rest of the company, were conveyed to El
Portal where the railroad physician, Dr. E. S. O'Brien, was summoned
from this city and has been constantly in attendance upon the patients
up to the present time. They are both reported as improving however. Mr.
Uhim is able to be around but Mrs. Weeks is still confined to her bed.
