THINGS IN MARIPOSA. – We took a business tour through Mariposa last
week, visiting Hornitos, Bear Valley and the county seat. So far as we
could observe but little change has taken place in the appearance of the
towns in the last two years, yet we observed more activity among the
ranchmen and the farming an gardening interests seem to be considerably
advanced since our previous visit. The princely estate of Los Mariposa
remains intact, and the active business of the county depends in a great
measure upon the successful management of the estate for prosperity.
Mining is carried on upon a large scale by the managers of the Grant and
a large number of men furnished with employment the year round hence the
county continues to prosper, notwithstanding the general decline of the
mining counties and of the mining interests generally.

Judging by the general activity of the people of the town of Mariposa,
we think times must be quite lively and money comparatively plenty. We
observed that our old friend, Angevine Reynolds has fitted up the
basement of the Odd Fellows' Hall and made it a magnificent assembly
room, and the young people frequently meet there to trip the "light
fantastic," Reynolds in all cases taking the lead and being considered
the presiding genius of all such assemblies.

The want of rain has been severely felt in the mountains as well as the
valley's there not having fallen a sufficiency of rain to set the small
streams to running to supply gulch and placer miners with water to wash
the dirt thrown up and prepared during the late dry season.
