Biography
George Reeb, of German descent, was born in Alsace Lorraine on May
20,
1831. He came overland to California from Ontario, Canada and
established
a
butcher shop in Hornitos in 1852 called the Hornitos Market. He also
worked
mining claims and bought mining property. On March 19, 1863, he married
Rosina Hunziker in Hornitos. Reeb owned 313 acres and farmed over a
thousand producing barley wheat, hay, and lumber. He also engaged in
land
speculation. He was elected and served several years as Town Trustee
of
Hornitos, the only incorporated town in Mariposa County.
Reeb was a Republican member of the Odd Fellow Lodge, and with his
family
members of the Crystal Band of Hope. Along with his butcher wagon runs,
he
established a branch butcher shop in neighboting Mt. Bullion in 1902.
Between 1908 and 1909, George Reeb was placed in the guardianship of
his
son, George M. Reeb of Hornitos. He died in Stockton, June 3, 1913,
and was
buried at Hornitos.
